Biology Internal Assesment

IA Format

Title/Question

  • Include independent and dependent Variable
  • Species should have scientific names

Background

  • Information thay enhances understanding of the topic 
  • Includes IV and DV
  • Includes personal engagement (Why is important to you)
  • Clarify aim of the investigation.

Hypothesis

  • State the hypothesis based on the background research.
  • Have a null and alternative.

Variables

  • IV- Wait you are manipulating (Only One)
  • DV: What you are measuring.
  • Controlled: All aspects of the experiment that must be kept the same.
  • All variables must be operationalized and be given in metric units (No teaspoons, cups, etc)

Materials

  • List them out such as sizes of glassware, concentration of chemicals, amount of each solution (eg 200 mL), ranges of each instrument (eg thermometer)

Method

  • Procedures in list form: address significant safety, ethical, or enviornmental issues relevant to the methodology.
  • Include images of experimental set ups.
  • Maintain precision when indicating amounts (eg 20.00 g instead of 20 g)
  • Indicate collection of sufficient data (how much data is collected and how you will process it)
  • Controlled variables section: explain how you controlled each control variable.

Raw Data

  • Includes quanititative and qualititative data.
  • Quantitative organized into a chart and chart must include uncertaintaties and titles.
  • All data should have the same number of decimal places.

Processed Data

  • Include a chart with averages and standard deviation.
  • Descriptions beneath each graph (only a couple of sentences are required)
  • T-test, Anova Test
  • Formulas used should be included along with a sample calculation using the raw data.
  • Include a graph of the processed data with a title and axis labels.
  • Graph should include error bars, a key if applicable, a trendline, and a r squared value.

Conclusion

  • What do the results imply about the research question?
  • Draw conclusions from results and mention outliers.
  • List at least 3 limitations and their potentional impacts.
  • Are there flaws in the procedures? Should something else have been controlled?
  • Suggest improvments to improve the investigation.

  • Include websites used for research in the background.
